Re: The Herbs of the Zodiac
Sun, February 22, 2009 - 11:47 PMThe body parts/functions that are associated with Virgo are the nerves, the nervous system, digestion, and elimination, and thus the large intestine, or colon. This accounts for the languaging that some authors use when they talk about Virgos being anal about something or anal-retentive.
Interesting that morning glory is listed as a Virgo herb. Do you supposed it's the laxative properties of certain varieties or the hallucinagenic properties of the seeds of certain other varieties that creates it's link to Virgo? ;)
Horehound has mild laxative qualities and can be used as as gastric tonic.
Mint is tummy soothing.
Cornflower's internal uses medicinally are used for Improving digestion, regulating gall bladder, liver and kidneys.
Lavender is, among other useful things, a nervine, which means it's good at chilling you out.
Marjoram tea has been used historically for relief from symptoms of hay fever, sinus congestion, indigestion, asthma, stomach pain, headache, dizziness, colds, coughs, and nervous disorders. It is a gently fragrant and calming herb.
The primary medical benefit of Caraway is its effect on digestion. It helps with gas and digestion. It is helpful to chew caraway seeds after a heavy meal and it can be used to settle a queasy stomach
Chervil, made into a tea reduces blood pressure. It is also an aid for digestion.
Dill seed water or tea treats indigestion, flatulence, hiccups, stomach and menstrual cramps.
Ha ha. Lilium candidum was the most significant flower symbol for Christians and suggested purity. As a symbol of purity associated with virgins it became known as the Madonna Lily. Medicinally, lily root can be used for stomach disorders. The scientific family that Lilies belong to include onions, garlic, and aloe. Certain properties of the aloe plant are used as a strong laxative in various preparations. Historically, physicians commonly prescribed aloe sap for “cleansing the body” of a variety of “toxins”.
Petunia, apparently, is perhaps not medicinal so much as a purdy flower.
I'm suprised fennel and cardamom are not listed as a Virgo herb, as each is good for soothing tummy and intestinal ailments. Though fennel is very closely related to dill, enough so that it will cross pollinate in a garden, or so I've read. -

Re: The Herbs of the Zodiac
Sun, March 29, 2009 - 12:11 AMIt must be a virgo thing to love herbs. Cinnamon and aloe is my favorites, here is some of cinnamon's benefits unfortuntaly I don't have a link as it's stuff I saved long ago.
CINNAMON
Cinnamon not only delights the taste buds, but benefits other parts of our body as well. It is
one of the world’s oldest healers. Recent research studies show that cinnamon contains
constituents that can kill bacteria and other micro-organisms, including Staphylococcus
aureus, the source of golden staph infections, and Clostridium botulinum, the source of
botulism. Cinnamon has also been found to destroy Aspergiilus parasiticus and A. fluvus, fungi
that produce aflotoxins, which are poisonous and carcinogenic.
CINNAMON KILLS STAPH BACTERIA
DRINK CINNAMON TEA FOR ALLERGIC RHINITIS
The leaves are used in the form of powder or decoction which is then added to medicines. They
stimulate the peristaltic wave and help in relieving distention of the abdomen or flatulence.
They also increase urination, which in a way helps in expelling metabolic waste products or
toxins out of the body.
One ayurvedic school has recommended the use of cinnamon in brain tonics for improvisation of
memory. Cinnamon is also considered useful for anxiety, depression and mental tension.
Cinnamon is considered a good remedy for irritating cough, common cold, allergic rhinitis, and
acute and chronic sinusitis. It helps in relieving a choking sensation and cleans respiratory
passages. Cinnamon, along with a few other herbal powders is boiled in water and used for
gargling in case of sore throat. An herbal tea is prepared out of these medicines and served
hot as a diaphoretic mixture in case of influenza and other unknown origin fevers. It induces
sweating and helps in relieving the fever.
Cinnamon is also used in digestive disorders like nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia (imperfect
digestion) and anorexia (loss of appetite). An ayurvedic carminative mixture for pediatric or
adult use essentially contains cinnamon. It also has proved its merit as a mouth freshener.
This is the reason why it is included in most of herbal toothpastes.
Ayurvedic beauticians also use cinnamon in creams or lotions and here it serves the purpose of
adding to fairness of skin and improving the complexion of skin. It is also used for external
application with few other herbal powders for headache related to cough, cold and fever. It
helps in reducing tension/cluster headaches as well. Some practitioners claim its use in hyper
pigmentation of skin as well as acne. It can be used externally and is taken internally with
honey and limejuice for desired effects.
One ayurvedic school of medicine has discussed role of cinnamon in birth control. More
research is needed to support this. Ayurvedic gynecologists have recommended use of cinnamon
in menorrhagia (excessive bleeding during menses) and medical trials have supported this
statement by claiming good results.
In short, cinnamon is a spice as well as a medicine. It helps in digestive, respiratory and
gynecological problems. Its use under medical supervision can help in giving better relief
