Your Chart Ruler

topic posted Mon, April 10, 2006 - 4:02 PM by  Wendy
The ruler of the entire chart is the Planet which rules the Ascendant Sign. If it happens that the Chart Ruler is in the Sign of the Ascendant itself, the personality is typical of that Sign. If , however, the Planet which is the Chart Ruler is in a Sign which is different from the Ascendant, you will have to take that into consideration and blend the two. The House which the Chart Ruler is in is also important. It may indicate the type of role which the person has taken on. To find your chart ruler, look to the correspondence list of signs to ruling planets:

Rising-Ruling Planet
Aries-Mars
Taurus-Venus
Gemini-Mercury
Cancer-Moon
Leo-Sun
Virgo-Mercury
Libra-Venus
Scorpio-Uranus
Sagitarrius-Jupiter
Capricorn-Saturn
Aquarius-Pluto
Pisces-Neptune

After you figure out the ruling planet, go look at what sign and house that planet is in. If you are a Libra or Taurus Rising, you will look to Venus, etc.

My ascendant (aka rising) is in Gemini, which is ruled by the planet Mercury, so my chart ruler is Mercury. In my chart, the planet Mercury is in Libra, in my 5th house.

One interpretation could be that I am a charming (Mercury in LIBRA) communicator and talker (Gemini rising) who tends to focus on the subjects of sex, art, and fun experiences and activites (5th house of romance, sex, creation, and children). People likely see me as more airy than earthy (my sun and moon) - at least initially.

I also happen to have Mars in Gemini conjunct my ascendant, which is like having a secondary chart ruler - it's like interpreting that I have Aries (ruled by Mars) rising, in Gemini, so I am also express myself through writing, speech, or teaching (Gemini) in a self-assured and direct (Mars) manner. I probably also like talking about myself (how long has this example gotten, hmmm...) and my many interests (Gemini). If you have planets within 10 degrees in either direction of your rising sign, add them to the mix and see if they add flavor to how people see you.

Follows are some rather spare descriptions of Chart rulers in the houses....

THE CHART RULER:

When the Chart Ruler is in the:
1st House: This person plays the role of a real go-getter and do- it-myself sort of person. This is the self-made man or woman who will always express their own point of view.

2nd House: This person is interested in money and possessions and deciding what his own values will be. Security issues and self-worth are of paramount importance.

3rd House: This is the person who may choose the role of the go-between or the link in the family. A good communicator and mentally active.

4th House: This may have been the little "mother" in the family and continues the role to adulthood. This person needs the solid foundation of a home and family.

5th House: This may have been the scamp, the romantic or the fun loving type. They may have a natural bent for creative ventures and could also express their ego and their love through children or art.

6th House: This can be the hypochondriac or the workaholic. They are the list-keepers and the organizers. They can also be the ones who complain the most when they are overburdened with what they take on themselves.

7th House: There is a need for sharing and for other people. This may be a competitive person and one who needs to express themselves through others. They might also be dependant types.

8th House: This person may be one who handles other people money for them. They may have a high interest in research, psychology, occult matters, death and birth, and sex.

9th House: This is the roamer in the family. The one who wants to spread their wings and fly away. Higher education, travel and ideas are all important.

10th House: Status and prestige, career fulfillment, being an authority figure are all important to this person.

11th House: Planning for the future and working with friends and groups are key. This can be an idealist or a techno freak.

12th House: This person may want to be very private or secret. They may enjoy working behind the scenes rather than up front.

Hey! My chart ruler is Mercury in Libra in the 5th as well. Neat! And I do flop from the scamp to the romantic to the adventurist.

I like how it says "this may have been" like I'll get over it or something. Do you write or teach? My Mercury happens to be conjunct Pluto. I've written about domestic violence, and women's human rights as they relate to interpersonal relationships (rape laws, domestic violence laws) and I've taught domestic violence awareness and massage for couples, perhaps seemingly unrelated, but both in the realm of relationships/romance, the previous topics being the darker side.

        taurus rising

so venus is my chart ruler

i have venus in leo retrograde in my 5th house and sun in virgo in my 5th house

        how would you interpret that.

I am a charming (venus in leo) preformer, quite stubborn and lazy (Taurus rising) who tends to focus on the subjects of sex, art, and fun experiences and activites (5th house of romance, sex, creation, and children).

Sensual. And a charmer- warm, friendly, outgoing, earthy with a driving urge to express yourself. That's how I would describe Taurus rising, Venus in Leo in the 5th house, Sun in the 5th. I don't think of Taurus as lazy at all. I associate Taurus with knowing when to work hard and when to kick back and enjoy the good things in life, and sometimes both at once.

Um Wendy, did you mean scorpio-pluto and aquarius-uranus? I noticed you had them as scorpio-uranus and aquarius-pluto...Sorry about that, but I saw it and it's driving me crazy*grinning*...As I have scorpio rising, pluto rules my chart...makes sense.Does the traditional ruler also have an influence? like in the case of mars being the ruler of both aries and traditionally scorpio for example?

        Dawn,

Thanks for catching that! Yes Scorpio-Pluto; Aquarius-Uranus.

I personally tend not to look at the traditional ruler. It's interesting information to have, but yeah, I look at Pluto for Scorpio, and if I'm even thinking about Mars it's as a subtext, sort of like looking at the decanate when thinking about sun signs.

          this is interesting...

my chart ruler is mars...in my chart, mars is ruled by libra in the seventh house.

i know about the mars in libra aspect...i tend to fight for the underdog, i like situations to be just and fair and i will fight for something that i am passionate about.

but - i'm a bit stuck on the 7th house part...(i guess based on the description wendy listed above i AM a bit dependant on others)

anyone willing to help me out?

          gracias and peace. :)

dependent in terms of desiring concurrence of your assertions, perhaps. or at least weighing the effects of your assertiveness on others to ensure fairness.

Acctualy to deternine the chart ruler is to go through the chart planet by planet deternining the rulers of each planet by house, and sign. You then start eleminating cross rulership to come up with one planet that is in control of everyone. EXAMPLE MY CHART:
Sun in Virgo, 5th house - by sign it is ruled by Mercury, by house it rules itself so it is in what is called MUTUAL RECEPTION
Mercury in Virgo-5th house - same as above
Mars in Virgo, 5th house - Ruled by mercury, because the Sun is in Virgo as well
Venus in Libra, 6th house - Again we wind up with a mutual recption, since Venus is in her own sign but in Mercury's house; so Mercury will be most likely the most dominate influence here.
Jupiter is in Libra in the 5th house - the rulership by house goes to the Sun, which is dominated by Mercury: by sign it is dominated by Venus which is in its own sign by dominated by Mercury by house position
Moon is in Aquarius in the 10th house - Here I have 2 choices, a rulership by either Saturn (the traditional ruler) or Uranus. Looking at the way the chart is stacking up so far I am going to go with the more traditional Saturn. First because of the house being ruled by Saturn, 2nd because Saturn in my chart is in Sagittarius - 7th house; which is ruled by Jupiter which is dominated by Mercury. Mercury so far has shown itself to be the strongest planet. By house it is ruled by Venus.
Uranus is in Leo, in the 4th house; by sign it is ruled by the Sun which is dominated by Mercury, by house it is ruled by the Moon which is dominated by sign by either Uranus or Saturn, and by house by Saturn, either way everything is weighted to being dominated by Mercury.
Next is Neptune in Scorpio, in the 6th house here again I will give the weight to Mercury since Pluto is in Virgo, in the 4th house.
Finally the Ascendent is Taurus, ruled by Venus - which is in the 6th house. So even though Venus is strong in my chart, the Ruler would most likely be Mercury. This is the method I was taught for determining rulership of a chart.

      hi,

I figured it out. My Jupiter is under the 8th house. This is so me. 8th House: This person may be one who handles other people money for them. They may have a high interest in research, psychology, occult matters, death and birth, and sex.
I love researching, and occult matters.

I seem to be the king of mutual receptions myself....

Jupiter in Aquarius, Uranus in Sagittarius.... only Air/Fire so both singleton also
Mercury in Cancer, Moon in Virgo
Moon in 12th, Neptune in 4th
Mercury in 10th, Saturn in 3rd

Then Venus in Taurus, Pluto in Scorpio...

How it sucks to have a spead out chart sometimes.... seems like your not alowed to be just part of one thing...

".... seems like your not alowed to be just part of one thing"

exactly . . . the goal is to integrate all of the parts. it's like ecology: monocropping is a dead end street.

Hummm Wendy that part has always confused me....

    Im a Cancer Sun......

I got Virgo on the Rising, with Cancer Mercury in the 10th house, Gemini MC.... then Moon in Virgo...

      Allan,

Yes the next step would be to follow the rulerships around until you find the final depositor (ie: where you end up if you look at the chart rulers' ruler, etc). I skipped over that part just to be simple.

Your chart ruler is Mercury in Cancer, deposited by the Moon in Virgo, and back around to Mercury in Cancer in a never-ending loop.

Take the 1st peice- the chart ruler of Mercury in Cancer in the 10th house and interprete it, then add Moon in Virgo (in the 1st?) house.

Chart ruler is Uranus, which is in my 11th house, in Capricorn. Two very different energies...both equally as stubborn, though. Instead of tearing all of the existing boundaries and rules down to radically change everything, I take it one step at a time and make small changes from within to change the outside of the system, to where, one day, it HAS been radically changed, but not in such a shocking and erratic nature.

If we were to focus more on Uranus...then there's several other aspects to it in my chart. Yod point straight at it, one apex at a tight (one degree difference) conjunction between my moon/mars in Gemini (4th house/conjunct IC), the other at Jupiter in Leo (6th house)...which could imply several things, but I see it as change/moving in a new, uncharted territory with all things creative, in work, most likely far away from home (the stereotypical interpretation of moon in 4th does not fit me whatsoever - I'm very restless and eager to travel) and a balancing act needed to keep my nervous, sometimes erratic nature at bay (accomplished through painting, writing, drawing - all things creative involving my hands or voice, or both).

Uranus also trines both my natal Mercury in retrograde, and my Venus. I attract lots of Aquarius people, or those with their Venus or Mars (or both) in Aquarius.

Uranus rules Scorpio & Pluto rules Aquarius? That could work I guess..

I wonder though if the chart ruler should be the ruler of the midheaven instead.
  • My Chart Ruler Scheme

    Fri, April 4, 2008 - 2:51 PM
    Rising-Ruling Planet

    Aries-Mars
    Taurus-Ceres (Venus)
    Gemini-Mercury
    Cancer-Moon
    Leo-Sun
    Virgo-Pallas (Vesta/Chiron)
    Libra-Venus
    Scorpio-Pluto (Mars)
    Sagittarius-Jupiter
    Capricorn-Saturn
    Aquarius-Uranus (Saturn)
    Pisces-Neptune (Jupiter)

The ones in parenthesis are strong/traditional co-rulers. I still don't get why you put Uranus for Scorpio and Pluto for Aquarius... Did anyone ever think of Saturn for Scorpio?

...Oh, I know! Maybe it was a typo! I'm a jeenyus! lol Idk, seemed kinda deliberate (the Pluto/Uranus switch I mean) which is why I'm still half-way thinking it was.
